Among Madhya Pradesh's most powerful pilgrimage circuits is the combination of Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda and Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. Nalkheda is home to one of the three principal Siddha Peethas of Maa Baglamukhi, while Omkareshwar — an island in the Narmada river near Khandwa — houses one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Completing both in a single yatra is increasingly popular with devotees from across central India.
This guide covers the complete route from Nalkheda (Baglamukhi Mandir) to Omkareshwar, the distance, transport options, driving tips, and how to plan the perfect 2-day Shakti–Jyotirlinga circuit.

Baglamukhi to Omkareshwar — Exact Distance
The road distance from Maa Baglamukhi Mandir, Nalkheda to Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is approximately 235 kilometres. By car or taxi, the journey takes 4.5 to 5 hours under normal traffic conditions. Google Maps may show slightly varying distances (225–245 km) depending on the exact route taken through Indore city, but the fastest route consistently goes via NH52 and then NH347 through Indore.
There is no direct route that avoids Indore — all practical road options funnel through either Dewas or Indore before heading south on NH347 towards Omkareshwar.
The Route: Nalkheda to Omkareshwar via Indore
The recommended route is:
Nalkheda → Agar Malwa (35 km) → NH52 → Dewas (120 km) → Indore (156 km) → NH347 → Omkareshwar (235 km)
From Nalkheda, head north on State Highway 27 to Agar Malwa (35 km, about 45 minutes). From Agar, join NH52 heading towards Indore. The highway passes through Barnagar and then Dewas before entering Indore. At Dewas (approximately 120 km from Nalkheda), some drivers choose the bypass — follow signs for Indore or directly for the Omkareshwar/Khandwa road.
Once past Indore (156 km from Nalkheda), take NH347 heading south towards Khandwa. Omkareshwar is approximately 77 km south of Indore. The NH347 is a well-maintained divided highway with good signage. You will see signs for "Omkareshwar" and "Jyotirlinga" well before the turnoff. Total distance from Nalkheda: approximately 235 km.
Road Quality Along This Route
- Nalkheda → Agar Malwa (SH27): 2-lane road, generally good condition, some potholes near Nalkheda town limits
- Agar Malwa → Dewas → Indore (NH52): 4-lane national highway, excellent condition throughout
- Indore → Omkareshwar (NH347): 4-lane national highway, excellent condition, well-lit and signed
- Omkareshwar town: Narrow lanes near the ghat — park at designated lots and walk or take an auto to the main temple (~500 m)
By Taxi — Most Recommended Option
For families and groups, a private taxi is by far the most comfortable way to cover this distance. The journey involves no public transport changes, lets you stop at Agar Malwa or Dewas for tea, and gives you flexibility on the return trip.
Private Taxi from Nalkheda to Omkareshwar
- Cost (one way): ₹4,000–₹5,000 for a standard AC sedan (up to 4 passengers)
- SUV / larger vehicle: ₹5,500–₹7,000 one way
- Round trip (same day): ₹7,500–₹10,000 — though this makes for a very long day given the 235 km each way
- Duration: Approximately 4.5–5 hours one way
Book your taxi from Nalkheda through local taxi operators near the temple bus stand, or ask your guesthouse/dharamshala to arrange one. For Navratri and Purnima days, book at least 2–3 days in advance as cabs fill quickly.
Alternative Route via Ujjain (Slightly Longer)
Some pilgrims prefer going Nalkheda → Ujjain → Indore → Omkareshwar. This adds approximately 30–40 km (total ~270 km) but allows a brief stop at Mahakaleshwar Ujjain en route. This makes the most sense for pilgrims who want a Jyotirlinga darshan both in Ujjain and Omkareshwar — a complete Shiva–Shakti circuit across Madhya Pradesh.
By Bus — Budget Option

- For the Indore–Omkareshwar leg, private "tempo traveller" buses are also available at Gangwal Bus Stand and are often faster

If you want to use the train from Indore to Omkareshwar Road, check the IRCTC app for trains on the Indore–Khandwa route and then take a shared auto or cab from Omkareshwar Road station to the temple (~12 km, ₹150–₹200 by auto).

3-Day Grand Circuit — Nalkheda + Ujjain + Omkareshwar
For a comprehensive Madhya Pradesh pilgrimage, many devotees do a 3-day circuit:
- Day 1: Nalkheda — Maa Baglamukhi darshan, evening aarti
- Day 2: Drive to Ujjain (100 km north) — Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Harsiddhi Mata, Ram Ghat aarti. Stay overnight in Ujjain.
- Day 3: Ujjain → Indore → Omkareshwar (170 km south). Jyotirlinga darshan, Narmada ghat aarti, return.
This covers one Shakti Peeth (Maa Baglamukhi, Nalkheda) and two of the 12 Jyotirlingas (Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar) in a single yatra.
Practical Tips for the Nalkheda–Omkareshwar Journey
- Start early: Depart Nalkheda by 7:00–8:00 AM to arrive Omkareshwar in time for midday darshan. The Jyotirlinga sees long queues from 10 AM onwards.
- Cash: Carry sufficient cash. ATMs in Nalkheda are limited — withdraw from Agar Malwa. Omkareshwar has ATMs but they sometimes run out during peak pilgrim season.
- Dress code: Both Nalkheda and Omkareshwar require modest dress. At Nalkheda, yellow clothes are auspicious. At Omkareshwar, any clean, modest attire is acceptable.
- Accommodation at Omkareshwar: The temple trust and various dharamshalas offer accommodation near the ghat. Book in advance for Mahashivratri and Sawan Mondays when rooms fill by 9:00 AM.
- Narmada Parikrama: The Omkareshwar island has a parikrama (circumambulation path) of about 7 km around the island. Allow 2–3 hours if you plan to walk it.
- Shoes: Leave footwear at the designated stands outside the main Omkareshwar temple complex. The inner sanctum has a stone floor that can be very hot in summer.
